What Might I Want to Think About?

Deciding to embark on a journey to parenthood is a big decision for any woman. But for a woman with cystic fibrosis, reaching a decision may involve a lot more consideration than for most.

Being able to talk to others who have already taken this step can be invaluable for women with CF and is one of the main reasons that our Facebook support forum has become so popular over the last few years. Questions that are often raised include:

“How will being a Mum affect my health?”

“How will I manage my treatments and caring for a young child?”

“Will I cope? What support will I need?”

Back in 2011, we were approached by CF psychologist, Sophie Cammidge, who was interested in undertaking in depth research looking at these and other issues experienced by mothers with CF. We were able to link Sophie with 11 of our members and over the course of 2 years Sophie conducted detailed interviews with these individuals and analysed the information provided.

Prior to this study, there was virtually no research into the psychological and social impact that becoming a mother has on women with CF.  Sophie presented her research at the European CF Conference in Lisbon in June 2013 where she was awarded the ‘Young Investigator of the Year’ award  by the European CF Society, in recognition of its significance.

Sophie has now compiled the results of her research into a simple ‘Question and Answer’ format which is accessible on the link below:
