Will My Child Have CF?

This is one of the first questions that most women with CF will consider when deciding on whether or not to have a child. It is always advisable to talk to your CF medical team or a genetic counselor to find out more about this issue before starting a family.  However, as a starting point, we have included two very useful resources that explain how CF is inherited and the risks of passing CF onto your child depending on the the genetic make-up of each parent.  The first is a leaflet produced by the charity Barnardos which is written specifically for couples considering having a child where one parent has CF.  The second is an extract from an excellent webinar produced by Cystic Fibrosis Canada in which Anna Tsang, Nurse Practitioner at the Toronto Adult CF Centre, explains the the likelihood of mothers or fathers with CF having a child who inherits the condition.
